Drew Murphy, an experienced golf course management professional with over 25 years in the industry, has accepted the position of Golf Course Superintendent at the City of Ottawa Golf Course. With an extensive background in turf management, equipment maintenance, and staff leadership, Drew brings a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience to the role.

Drew's journey in the golf industry began at Mossland Memorial Golf Course in his hometown of Flagler, Colorado, where he worked under the mentorship of Superintendent Norman Murphy from 1990 to 2000. During this time, he learned to maximize resources, perform essential course maintenance on a budget, and ensure the longevity of equipment through effective service and repair. This foundational experience sparked a lifelong passion for golf course management.

Drew returned to the golf industry in 2004 as a member of the maintenance team at Heritage Park Golf Course in Olathe, Kansas. Over the next decade, he gained hands-on experience in all aspects of golf course maintenance. In 2015 he was promoted to the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent where he excelled in managing the daily operations of the course and implemented best practices to improve turf health, enhance course playability, and ensure the overall quality of the facility.

In his previous role at Heritage Park Golf Course, Drew worked closely with the Superintendent to manage and schedule day-to-day operations. He oversaw the maintenance of multiple turf types, including bentgrass greens, fescue roughs, and zoysia fairways. He has developed and executed chemical and fertilizer application programs, ensuring they meet the specific needs of each area of the course. His experience in irrigation system management and course renovation projects, including the installation of a new Rain Bird pump station, has significantly improved course conditions and operational efficiency.

Drew’s leadership extends beyond turf management; he is responsible for managing a team of seasonal workers, delegating tasks, and providing training in equipment operation and maintenance. His collaborative approach to staff management and communication with the pro-shop and vendors has earned him a reputation for fostering strong relationships and creating a positive, productive work environment.

In addition to his hands-on experience, Drew is a dedicated professional who holds a Class C membership with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), a Chemical Applicator’s License in the State of Kansas, and certifications in CPR and First Aid. He has a deep understanding of the importance of budgeting, purchasing, and cost control in golf course operations, consistently managing resources efficiently while maintaining high standards of quality.

Drew has also collaborated with golf legends Tom Watson and Jeff Burey on the creation of a 6-hole Wee Links course at Heritage Park Golf Course. His ability to oversee large-scale projects, from bunker renovations, to stream bank stabilization, further underscores his ability to lead complex initiatives and maintain a high standard of course quality.

“I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience and passion for golf course management to the City of Ottawa Golf Course,” said Drew. “My goal is to enhance the playability and aesthetic appeal of the course while maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring the best possible golfing experience for members and visitors.”

With his extensive experience, hands-on expertise, and commitment to excellence, Drew is poised to make a significant impact as the next Golf Course Superintendent at the City of Ottawa Golf Course.
