In preparation for the City’s annual water distribution system flushing program, the treatment process has been changed to a free chlorine disinfectant. Customers may experience a stronger than usual chlorine smell in their water as this works its way through the system.  The chlorine odor should dissipate over time as it works to clean the system.

The water is entirely safe to drink and use as normal. If customers find the taste objectionable, putting an open top pitcher in the refrigerator for a few hours will usually remedy this. Flushing of the mains will start in the next few days and generally lasts 4 to 6 weeks. We will then convert back to our typical combined chlorine disinfectant.

As always, it is our goal to provide safe, aesthetically pleasing water to our customers. Please bear with us as we make this necessary, short-lived change to continue the safe delivery of potable water.

Thanks,

Ottawa Water Treatment staff
